Bal Vatika
Balvatika in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) refers to the pre-primary or foundational classes introduced as part of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These classes aim to provide early childhood care and education (ECCE) to children aged 3–6 years. The inclusion of Balvatika in Kendriya Vidyalayas aligns with the NEP’s vision of ensuring a strong foundational base for lifelong learning.
Key Features of Balvatika in KVs:
Age Group: Balvatika caters to children in the age range of 3 to 6 years, divided into:
Balvatika-1: For children aged 3–4 years.
Balvatika-2: For children aged 4–5 years.
Balvatika-3: For children aged 5–6 years (equivalent to Kindergarten or LKG/UKG).
Curriculum:
Focus on play-based, activity-oriented, and experiential learning.
Development of basic literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills.
Use of mother tongue or regional languages for teaching to create a familiar and comfortable learning environment.
Implementation:
Teachers are trained in ECCE methodologies.
Classroom environments are child-friendly and equipped with appropriate learning materials.
Objective:
To prepare children for Grade 1 by fostering holistic development.
Align foundational education with the goals of NEP 2020.
Admission and Fees:
Admissions to Balvatika follow the same guidelines as other classes in KVs.
A nominal fee may be applicable, similar to the structure of primary education in KVs.
Balvatika classes have been rolled out in select Kendriya Vidyalayas initially, with plans for gradual expansion across more schools. This initiative is a significant step in integrating ECCE into formal schooling in India.
